The Reason Behind the "Extended Version"

As far back as I can remember, Jesus of Nazareth was, and remains, the benchmark by which all films about Christ are measured. I vividly remember growing up watching it every Easter, always completely awestruck every time Christ appeared on screen. One day, I came across production still photographs that were not included in the final cut, which led me to believe that deleted scenes might exist somewhere. As time passed, I resolved to search for this footage to incorporate it into the film, despite its already substantial running time of over six hours. I felt it was well worth the effort—at least for my own satisfaction—if there were indeed deleted scenes that would be wonderful to include. For me, one of the most significant of these was the "Temptations in the Desert".

When I purchased Franco Zeffirelli's book, Jesus: A Spiritual Diary, I read that he had indeed filmed the sequence but chose to cut it at the very last moment. Sadly, it now survives only in photographs. Therefore, I set out to reconstruct this scene using those stills alongside desert footage, eliminating the need to turn to other biblical films to witness this sequence. Consequently, I collected further footage to finally complete my vision, whilst also including additional scenes that I have always held close to my heart.

This version is in no way intended to replace Franco Zeffirelli's masterpiece. Rather, it is for those who, like myself, desire a more comprehensive biblical narrative within a film so many of us cherish. In his book, Zeffirelli himself mentions that he had wished to include more scenes. Painstaking work has been poured into this edition; it is strictly a fan project and is not for sale. It stems purely from a desire to satisfy a church boy's dream of seeing an almost complete story of Christ. Jesus of Nazareth is the film that I will hold closest to my heart for the rest of my days.

Jesus of Nazareth (Artisan Dvd 2002)

Franco Zeffirelli creates an unforgettable portrait in his legendary interpretation of the life of Jesus Christ. Beginning before the Nativity and extending though the Crucifixion and Resurrection, "Jesus Of Nazareth" brings to life all the majesty and sweeping drama of the life of Jesus (portrayed here by Robert Powell) as told in the Gospels. A star-studded cast featuring Michael York, Sir Laurence Olivier, James Earl Jones, Anne Bancroft, Olivia Hussey, Rod Steiger and Anthony Quinn, adds depth and humanity to the roles of the saints, sinners and ordinary people who walked in the footsteps of the Lord. The film provides the setting and background for the birth, childhood, baptism, teaching, and many miracles of the Messiah, culminating in the Divine Resurrection. Directed by Oscar(R) nominee Franco Zeffirelli and acclaimed by critics and religious leaders worldwide, "Jesus Of Nazareth" tells the greatest of all stories with tremendous emotion and splendor.

Jesus of Nazareth (Hardcover)

William Barkley’s Jesus of Nazareth book should come as a special edition package offered with the film. Filled with stunning pictures (none screen caps but actual production photos) the story of Jesus is written to closely follow the narrative of Anthony Burgesses’ script of the film. The book not only follows the film but also gives a background to many of the characters in the film to humanise the Jesus story that leads one to view the motives and views of early 1st century Judea. After reading the book one feels compelled to view the film again and it truly is a rewarding experience. Along with Franco Zeffirelli's" Jesus A Spiritual Diary" this book is a must have for any fan of the film.

Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus: A Spiritual Diary

Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus a spiritual diary" is a great companion to his masterpiece Jesus of Nazareth. Zeffirelli describes the labour of finding the locations, the proper screenplay and most important  the actor who would portray the son of God. From his various trips to the Middle East, meetings with the Pope, and his surreal screen test on Robert Powell which astonished everyone and led to his casting as Jesus, this is gem awaiting discovery. This book includes photos and artwork by Zefirrelli himself during the filming of the miniseries. One of the most memorable moments in his diary is his explanation of how the resurrection scene was meant to be filmed entirely different from the final outcome and how a sandstorm and others natural disasters interrupted filming the scene several times during a course of a couple of days until the final decision was made and the result is what is now in the timeless classic.
